Soundbite: The Start of a New Horror

Soundbite is the first offering from Michael Coulombe and his new Youtube Channel Horror House Media. The film itself is short, simple, and very much to the point. A young woman is in her bedroom at night preparing to go online and, presumably, do whatever it s that teen girls do on the internet. (Damn I feel old saying it like that!) She opens up her laptop and logs on to a mysterious program, an audio file complete with bizarre chanting and whispering, childlike voices. Suddenly, one of the formless, unintelligible voices is a clear and haunting as anything else. “Do it!” A door slams and a terrifying realization comes too late for what is now the latest victim of the Soundbite.

The film is simple but atmospheric and well shot. The low light environment, the candles, and the imagery are set a scene that could easily be the start of any number of horrific scenarios. Other than the mysterious “Death Song” as it’s referred to in a separate video there is no dialogue which adds to the mystique of the short. Frankly, there isn’t enough yet on the channel to give a comprehensive review but that’s often the way things go when they’re just starting. Soundbite, Soundbite Challenge, and a teaser for the channel are currently the only videos available on Horror House but they have a very viral video/haunted footage quality to them.

The videos available from Horror House are building to something. While very few they are definitely creating an ominous, foreboding sense of what’s to come. I subscribed tonight and I’m looking forward to seeing what Horror House and Michael Coulombe have in store for the future.

Meanwhile, take the Soundbite Challenge and listen to the Death Song...if you dare.
