NEW ON SHUDDER: APRIL 2017

It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in the new year, and now we’re already a quarter into 2017. April is coming up, and that means new horror flicks over at Shudder! The streaming site is commonly known as “Netflix for horror fans”, and only costs $4.99 a month for countless films, both new and obscure.

Without preamble or fanfare, Shudder shocked its subscribers in March by announcing that one of the most controversial horror films ever is now available for streaming. Ken Russell's 1971 historical drama/horror THE DEVILS has reached near-mythic status among film buffs and genre enthusiasts. Due to the blasphemous and highly sexual content (including the phallic defiling of a Jesus statue), THE DEVILS received an X-Rating upon release, and was severely cut down (from 117 minutes to 103 minutes). The film remained elusive and impossible to find in the U.S. - until now. While it’s not the completely uncut version, most of the controversial material remains in its 109-minute run-time. If you’re a Shudder subscriber, don’t miss this flick.

New titles in April include a couple of exclusive films and a new show:

Prevenge - A slasher black comedy in which a young pregnant woman begins to hear commands from her fetus: commands to kill. Written and directed by Alice Lowe, Prevenge sends up the glowing fertility goddess trope we see so often with pregnant women in films, and promises to be a dark meditation on pre-partum anxiety.

Jordskott (Season 1) - Seven years ago, police investigator Eva Thörnblad’s daughter, Josefine, disappeared. Still attempting to cope with the loss, Eva is haunted by the belief that Josefine did not drown during their fateful trip to the Silverhojd Lake, but was abducted. When a young boy goes missing in the same area, this motivates Eva to delve deeper into the mystery of the forest and confront her darkest fears. The series premieres on April 6th with the first two episodes, and two additional episodes are to be released on consecutive Thursdays in April.

We Are The Flesh - Another Shudder exclusive, We Are The Flesh is Emiliano Rocha Minter’s first directorial effort, following a brother-sister duo in post-apocalyptic Mexico. Lucio and Fauna wander the ruins for years in search of food and shelter until they find their way into a building where a man makes them a dangerous offer to survive the outside world. As they help him transform the building into a womb-like cave, a disquieting sexual relationship emerges, along with a dynamic in which darker instincts do their destructive work. Check out the film that Fangoria has called, “visually spellbinding”!
